Just like us humans, dental problems to the pet can cause a lot of pain and agony to the animal. And unlike us, they are unable to express it. The onus of taking care of the pet’s dental problems likes solely on the owner. Prevention of major illnesses can be done by taking care of the teeth of the pet. This is because, dental problems in pets translate into various other ailments and are not confined only to the teeth. They tend to infect the kidneys, heart or liver too. In cats, periodontal problems are the widest cause of health problems and by the time they reach adult stage, more than 80% of the pets have problems with their teeth. In dogs, by the age of three, 80% start showing signs of dog dental problems. Even though cavities are rare in dogs, signs such as cracked teeth are indication enough of some problem with the teeth.
What Kind of Dental Problems Can Your Pet Have?
Cleaning of your pet’s teeth should be a routine to avoid a lot of dental problems such as plaque buildup. This plaque, if not removed regularly, turns into tartar (hardened plaque) and causes gum problems and irritations called gingivitis. Some symptoms of gingivitis would be the reddening of gums right next to the teeth and occurrence of bad breath. Tartar build up also leads to periodontal diseases which affects the heart, liver and kidney by infecting them. These problems are common to both cats and dogs. Cats, in addition, have problems such as drooling or lump due to dental problems.
Pet Teeth Cleaning Risks
Cleaning of the pet’s teeth may not be an easy task, given the pet’s resistance and reluctance to opening the mouth. On the other hand, a vet will do it under anesthesia which would work out very expensive in the long run. So the best option would be to carry out the routine checks and cleaning at home and go to the vet only in case of larger or more serious problems. Once it becomes a routine, it will be less time consuming and a simple task at hand. The cleaning of the pet’s mouth involves a full inspection of the mouth and not only the teeth. Any growth of ulcers etc. is also checked and not matter how well behaved or obedient the pet maybe, putting up the dental procedures, the possible discomforts involved and the noise involved during the procedures would be a difficult task for him/her.
